1987 Volkswagen Vanagon GL

Mileage: 194,000

Holladay, UT | Posted May 2, 2021

$27,800

Up for sale is my fabulous 1987 “Kiwi Green” Volkswagen Vanagon GL Westfalia with 2.2L Subaru EJ22 engine. While it is no garage queen, it has been used lovingly and well-maintained. I’m selling because despite my emotional attachment to it, we'd like something with modern safety features like airbags, so it hasn’t seen much since our first little one arrived.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or for more pics/video.
Will consider any reasonable offer.
Extras include:
4x Mefro-style 15” steel wheels with Nokian Hakkapellita studless snow tires
Wet Okole front seat covers
Full fabric cover
Front bra
Bike rack
As with any Vanagon in good condition with many miles, the list of repairs / upgrades is too long to list, but here are the broad strokes:
Options include:
Power steering
Power assisted brakes
4spd manual transmission
A/C (converted to R134a but no Subaru hosing/fittings/compressor, quoted $2200 by Utah Imports to finish and advised against it because the A/C in these is mediocre at best)
Pop-top roof with opening skylight
2 double beds (sleeps 4; 2 up, 2 down)
Two burner gas stove (works, but buyer strongly advised to upgrade the 30 y/o OEM propane tank)
Sink
Rear table bracket for front table
Water tank
Front swivel captains chairs
Kenwood CD player w/remote, aux input and detachable face plate - pre-wired for subwoofer in rear bench
Screens curtains
12V refrigerator (Truckfridge)
50Ah LiPo aux battery (installed Fall 2020)
1.25” tow hitch receiver
Bike rack
Notable upgrades/maintenance:
2.2L 135 HP EJ22 Subaru (OBD1 from a 1996 Impreza), installed by P/O 3/06 (151k miles). Mileage on the replacement engine is unknown, but it runs smoothly, doesn’t burn oil and starts right up.
Beautiful custom paint job in Kiwi Green (Ford OEM color). Stock camper hookups moved from original location down next to propane tank for nice clean look
All rubber window seals and pop top seal replaced when the glass was out for painting
Interior wood panels re-cut and wrapped in new marine grade vinyl, sound deadening added
Following mechanical systems repaired/replaced in past 50k miles post engine conversion:
Rebuilt 4spd transaxle (German Transaxle)
New clutch, linkage
New starter
New axles
Bilstein HD shocks
New catalytic convertor, O2 sensor, muffler, tailpipe
New exhaust headers
15” alloy GW wheels
Front brakes (hubs, calipers, shoes, brake lines)
Rear brake (drums, shoes)
Suspension: tie rod ends, bushings, ball joints, control arm bushings
Stainless coolant lines
Heater core
Front heater blower motor
Reseal fuel tank replace filler hose
As mentioned it is no garage queen and there are some blemishes/issues worth mentioning:
While the paint is very nice, it has some dings/scratches from encounters with brush and garage doors, and some minor seam rust has appeared in a couple of the typical spots (lower rear quarter panels)
The interior upholstery work isn't great; the vinyl around the new wood sliding door panel needs to be reglued. Also, the front interior door panels are a bit rough with holes left over from removed power mirror switchgear
Oil pressure gauge is inoperative
Recently re-seated rear drum brake is squeaking under moderate braking pressure
Left stove knob spins freely (valve works fine otherwise)
OEM central locking is not working (probably a corroded wire in the driver side door
All in all, it’s a mechanically tight vehicle that needs nothing major. It looks fantastic, it’s a great adventure vehicle, and it will put a smile on your face every time you drive it. It’s full of happy memories for me and my family, and it’s hard to let it go, but it should really go to someone who will use it and love it.

    Vin Info Has Changed

    What’s this mean?

KSL Cars uses VIN info to automatically pull details about vehicles listed on the site. The seller edited some info when they created this listing – the changes they made are marked with this symbol.

This doesn’t always mean something is wrong – we just think you should know that changes were made. But it’s probably a good idea to ask the seller about them. As always, if you don’t feel comfortable about it, do not proceed with the purchase.
