The era of gas guzzlers is fading away. Modern vehicles get better fuel economy than ever before, with many models topping 40 mpg on the highway. Buying one of these fuel sippers saves you money at the pump and helps the environment.

2022 Hyundai Elantra | 33-43 mpg

Each of Hyundai Elantra’s four trim levels is an excellent choice when it comes to features and fuel economy. For truly exhilarating performance, however, you’ll want the turbocharged engine in the N Line model.

2021 Kia Rio | 33-41 mpg

High fuel economy plus sporty handling? Kia Rio delivers both in its 20th year of production. Though newer models have more bells and whistles than older ones, you can't go wrong with any Kia Rio from the last decade.

2020 Honda Fit | 33-40 mpg

The last model year of the final generation, this is the little hatchback that could. It offers a zippy engine, nimble handling and (of course) fantastic fuel efficiency. This Honda Fit generation is also known for its versatile seat configuration.

2022 Toyota Corolla | 33-40 mpg

Reliable and affordable, this compact car is popular with novice drivers and seasoned commuters alike. Toyota Corolla comes standard with a spate of safety and comfort features. Higher trim levels with 2.0-liter engines return slightly better mpg than those with 1.8-liter engines. A hybrid model is also available.

2021 Honda Civic | 31-40 mpg

This Honda Civic generation was introduced in 2016. Few things have changed in the model years since, making any 2016-2021 Civic a solid buy. Civics tend to have excellent resale value and very little maintenance.
