Whether it’s a first car for your teen or a bigger van to haul a soccer team, KSL Cars has a vehicle to match your needs. Once you find the perfect fit, congratulate yourself for making a great deal. But before the car officially belongs to you, you’ll need to register it in your name. We explain how to transfer a car title in Idaho in just a few quick steps.
What you’ll need
When you purchase a vehicle from a private seller, you’re responsible for filing documents with the county assessor’s motor vehicle office. This should be done within 30 days.
- Title, signed by the seller
- Bill of Sale, if the sale price is not listed on the title
- Odometer Disclosure, if vehicle model year is 2011 and newer
- Vehicle Identification Number Inspection, completed by Division of Motor Vehicles employee or law officer
- Proof of Idaho residency
- Cash or check to pay taxes and fees
Idaho transfer title fees
When you register your newly purchased vehicle in Idaho, you’ll be charged a 6% sales tax on the sale price and a $14 title fee. There is also a registration fee, based on the vehicle’s age and type, as well as your county of residence.
Registration
Basic annual registration fees for passenger vehicles vary based on the model year.
- 1-2 years old: $69
- 3-6 years old: $57
- 7 years or older: $45
Electric vehicles
- Electric: Additional $140
- Plug-in hybrid: Additional $75
Verify the title
The seller must provide the vehicle title to the buyer. As a buyer, be sure the information on it is correct.
- Match the seller’s name with the one listed on the title
- Verify the VIN, located on the driver-side door jamb or on the dashboard
- Verify the odometer mileage
- Verify the purchase price and sale date
- Check that the seller has signed the title
Missing title
If the title has been lost or is no longer legible, the seller may apply for a duplicate title. There is a $14 fee. To apply for one, the seller must complete the Duplicate Idaho Title Application and have their signature notarized or witnessed by an Idaho Transportation Department employee.
Out-of-state title
The basic requirements to register a vehicle that was purchased out of state are the same as an in-state purchase. You will also need to bring the vehicle to the county Assessor’s DMV Office for a VIN inspection and pay a $5 fee.
