The Mustang Mach-E is here to win you over

With a sporty ride and tons of range, the Mach-E endeavors to win over the harshest skeptics.

In my 36 years, I've indulged in over two dozen cars (credit to my amazing wife). My gig as an automotive journalist, meanwhile, puts me behind the wheel of more than a hundred vehicles annually. This driving spree has both perks and pitfalls. On the one hand, it's thrilling to sample such a variety of vehicles, but I’m also constantly comparing automotive excellence versus mediocrity.

So naturally, I harbored doubts while testing out the 2023 Mustang Mach-E. A battery-powered SUV bearing the cherished Mustang emblem? Could it hold its own against the brand's heritage? Was it truly exceptional?

Well, it holds its own, and it’s more than exceptional — it exceeds expectations. If you're wavering on embracing an EV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E might just win you over. Car and Driver bestowed upon it a 9/10 rating, and rightly so. Here are four of my favorite features from my time behind the wheel.

Surpassing range expectations

Concerns about range are commonplace among prospective EV buyers, myself included. However, after five days of commuting and running errands in the Mach-E, its range surpassed my expectations.

Equipped with the optional $7,000 91 kWh battery in my premium trim model, the Mach-E extended its range to 290 miles (in all-wheel drive models). Despite daily indulgences in stereo, heated seats and air conditioning, the depletion closely matched my 190-mile journey. Maintaining nearly 100 miles of range after a week of commuting was definitely reassuring to a self-proclaimed skeptic like me.

Still unsure? Ford recently made an agreement with Tesla for access to their supercharger network. Knowing there’s a fast and convenient charging network out on the road makes the Mach-E even more appealing.

A dynamic driving experience

When the Mustang Mach-E was announced, skepticism ran high. Could this electric SUV truly live up to the Mustang legacy? I'll leave that judgment to you, but I can attest — it's a thrill to drive.

Most EVs boast impressive acceleration, and the Mach-E is no exception. However, its standout features lie in handling and agility. Despite its size, it maneuvers with the finesse of a smaller vehicle. And when you engage the sporty "Unbridle" driving mode, together with its sound propulsion, you'll feel like you're piloting a genuine sports car. It's addictive, and perfectly enhanced by the artificial engine growl pumped through the speakers.

Car and Driver echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the Mach-E's agility compared to conventional crossovers. While it may not match the traditional Mustang's allure (few things can), its quiet operation and smooth ride leave a lasting impression.

Comfort and utility

What struck me most about the 2023 Mustang Mach-E was its unparalleled comfort, thoughtful interior design and practicality.

The seats, among the plushest I've encountered, made every ride a genuine delight. With exceptional heating capabilities, these seats are a dream for those who relish warmth. This level of comfort makes the Mach-E ideal for road trips, especially when you have access to the Tesla supercharger network.

Even with booster seats occupied in the back, there's no shortage of legroom. The cargo area is surprisingly sizable and is complemented by the useful front trunk, aka the frunk.

Major kudos also go to Ford for the user-friendly Sync infotainment system. Despite my aversion to overly techy interfaces, Sync's responsiveness and intuitive design won me over. The 15.5-inch display was a delight, especially with wireless Apple CarPlay.

Final Reflections

It’s natural to be hesitant about buying an EV; they're a departure from the familiar. The Mustang Mach-E demands at least a test drive, however. With commendable range, comfort and driving dynamics, it's a compelling choice.

And with home and nationwide charging options, range anxiety becomes a thing of the past. Whether it embodies the true spirit of the Mustang is up to you. But regardless of the badge, the Mach-E warrants serious consideration for your next automotive investment.
