Description
I’ve loved my 2007 with the 3rd row for the past 12 years. It’s a comfortable, tight ride. It’s awesome around town, and great off road. I’ve taken my family of 7 over snow and ice to ski resorts or up in the mountains to cut a Christmas tree, etc. I love this 4Runner.
I was hoping to drive it past 300k miles and then buy a Taco, but the timing chain has stretched and the tensioner is to the limit.
It still drives very well, but the check engine light is on due to the codes thrown by the tensioner sensor.
Because life is busy I’m wimping out of doing the job myself and I’d rather not pay someone to do it. The whole replacement kit (chain, water pump, gaskets) ranges from $200 - $1k. And if you are mechanically inclined, the job is quite doable (especially with the step by step video of the same model on youtube).
If you know a 4Runner, then you know all the great stuff about them, so I won’t try to sell you. I’m just going to tell you all the things that are wrong with it at 275k miles:
- Stretched timing chain
- No rear window wiper
- Had a rusted hole in the tailgate. I covered it with silicon, but you may want to weld and paint if you care (though rust is tuff)
- Passenger window switch allows the passenger to roll down the window, but it must be rolled up on the driver side.
- The remote lock actuator doesn’t work, so the fob lock/unlock won’t work (new fob won’t fix it)
- The clear coat over the paint on the hood is wearing off (coat it up yourself. The rest of the paint looks really good)
- New tires with lots of tread (wait, that’s not a bad thing, but it came to mind)
- (speaking of not bad things, the windshield is fairly new, and it has Bluetooth and plug-in car-play/android with a backup camera, I replaced all the shocks/struts 2 years ago, and I replaced all of the brake pads and rotors last year)
- The back window still rolls down and up, though it is sometimes slow… may need a new motor eventually.
- The MPG is around 17 but it used to be higher, I haven’t replaced the spark plugs in 10 years… whoops.
