2005 VW Jetta 2.5L Manual - Mechanic’s Special / Project
Price: $1,500
Mileage: 189,597
Title: Clean
Transmission: 5-Speed Manual
The Good: I’ve kept this car in good working order and have shown it a lot of love recently. When it’s running, it drives great and the 2.5L engine is solid. Recent maintenance includes (with receipts):
New tires all around
New brake pads and rotors (all 4)
New front suspension springs recent alignment
New serpentine belts and pulleys
Fresh oil change
The "Mechanic’s Special" Part: I am a college student and simply don’t have the time, tools, or budget to finish these repairs. The car currently cannot be driven away because it won't hold coolant. It likely needs a new coolant temperature sensor housing (the system won't pressurize). I replaced the sensor itself, but the housing appears to be the culprit. You will need to tow it or repair the housing on-site to drive it home.
Other Known Issues:
Check Engine Light: Code P0420 (Catalyst system efficiency). It’s intermittent in summer, but stays on in winter. Mechanics have given mixed opinions on what could be the cause, but I haven't noticed it affect driving. In the photo it shows EPC and battery warnings before ignition, this is normal VW behavior. They turn off after ignition.
Note: I cannot speak to whether it will pass emissions; the car is registered in Washington County, so I haven't been required to perform an emissions test.
Electrical: Passenger door wiring is loose (locks/windows intermittent); driver-side speakers are out; wipers work but the intermittent setting does not; horn works, but no "beep" when locking with the fob.
Cosmetics: Clear coat failure on the passenger side, rear driver side door, front passenger quarter, and roof; large dent under the front passenger door (snow pile incident); headliner is starting to sag in the rear; hood insulation is worn.
A/C: Works, but sometimes takes a minute to kick in.
Summary: This is a perfect project for someone who knows Volkswagens. With the coolant housing fixed, you have a reliable manual daily with brand-new tires and brakes. I'm asking $1,300.
Location: American Fork. Please bring a trailer or a tow dolly!
