2003 Hyundai Elantra GT - Mechanic's Special
History:
We've owned this car for about 5 years. It has a clean title. We tried to take good care of it. The timing belt broke in 2024 (we were told it had a new timing belt when we bought it - not the case). The engine was completely rebuilt at approx. 179k miles, with all new internal parts - professionally machined as well. At the same time replaced several seals on the transmission and the torque converter. Has new axels, wheel bearings, shocks, tie-rods, lower control arms/ball joints, sway bar bushings, radiator, a/c condenser, brakes and rotors all the way around, all fluids flushed, and more. New Kenwood radio and speakers also installed.
We've been letting my son drive the car for several months. He first had a minor accident in the fall. We were planning to have it repaired. Then, apparently, oil started leaking out of the engine. He didn't notice it. It finally broke down last week and I calculated that there was roughly 2 quarts left in the engine. We had it towed to our home. I took off the valve cover and the top of the engine seems fine; however, it won't turn at the camshaft/timing belt like it should. This tells me that there is something going on down in the crankshaft and pistons area. I believe the engine lacked enough oil and seized. These engines are easy to rebuild and/or find/replace; and, for a mechanic it shouldn't be much work. It has so many new parts it would be a great restore car project for someone willing to put a little money, time, and work into it.
There are no codes stored in the computer and it has not been cleared.
Let me know if you are interested in looking at it. It will need to be towed.
