1997 Toyota 4runner. I have owned this thing for about 18 years and have absolutely loved it. I bought it with about 126k miles on it, so I know a lot of its history. I'm trying to sell this along with my Tundra to consolidate vehicles. I'm also 6'4" and don't fit in the vehicle that well. A fact I've ignored for nearly half my life because I love this thing. I'll list some of the good/bad things below.
Good:
-New Old Man Emu shocks/struts about 1.5 years ago. OME 890/881 coils, to give about a 2.5-3 inch lift.
-1 inch front diff drop installed to reduce CV shaft angle.
-New CV boots about 1.5 years ago (still has OEM Toyota CV axles, with OEM boot kit from the dealership).
-New poly steering rack bushings about 8 months ago.
-About 15 years ago, I swapped the rear axle with a Toyota axle that had an elocker.
-About 15 years ago, installed rock sliders.
-Have tried to keep up on suspension/engine work.
-Timing belt has about 40k miles on it, replaced 5.5 years ago.
-Engine oil done every 3-4k miles. I have been using Synthetic for the past few years.
-About 40k miles ago, the head gasket was leaking coolant into one of the cylinders. I took it to a Toyota master mechanic. He said it's a common thing for this engine after about 250k miles due to the heat generated by the exhaust. He redid the head gaskets, verified surfaces were all flat, replaced a bunch of the rubber hoses/gaskets on the top end of the engine. It has been running great since.
-The front seats were torn up so I replaced the bottom part of the seat with new foam/covers from eBay. They're not the best quality, but they've held up pretty well. I did this about 1.5 years ago.
-Magnaflow muffler
Bad:
-Stereo isn't working very well. There is a short somewhere and I've been too lazy to fully fix it. I've tried a few things, but the solution is probably to replace the stereo and/or the amp.
-ABS light is on, I think one or two sensors are bad. I've never cared to fix them.
-Might have a small oil leak. I've noticed some small drops on my driveway. It could also just be leaking through the drain plug.
As mentioned, I've owned this for a long time and I'm happy to discuss any potential concerns. It has been a super reliable vehicle for us. It has a lot of miles, but I'm confident it has many more to go. We've taken it to Southern Utah to do some wheeling and it always impresses me how capable it is for the small modifications I've done.
