1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia
A Van Named ‘Willow’ Water Cooled
I bought this van at the beginning of 2021. VW Upfitters out of West Valley performed the engine swap, Metric Motor built the wiring harness. This has been the most fun vehicle I have ever owned. I have loved working on it and driving it around. It was my daily driver for 3 years. We have out grown it as a family and are now traveling around in an airstream. Questions welcome, serious buyers only please.
Mechanically this van has had about everything that should be replaced, replaced. Not listed in this upgrade list are every bushing, wheel bearing, window felt, door parts, and small things like tie rods that I have replaced. Probably another $2,000 of small parts over the years. As you can see by the parts list below, I always splurged for the nicer parts. All of the following work has been completed in the last 4 years. Only 17k miles on the new engine and even less on rebuilt suspension. I've got well over $40k into this build. All that is left to do is cosmetic, if you are into that type of thing, mechanically, it is a very sound rig.

Small Issues
The heater cable needs to be replaced, to turn the heater on in the winter, you just have to crawl under and open the valve. The other parts of the heater control like van and defrost work, as well as the vent control. It is just the heater cable.
Currently it does not have a speedometer installed, it never bothered me, I got used to reading the RPM’s off of the Scan Gauge to know my speed in each gear. I have the Speedometer kit but just never got around to installing because it never bothered me.
Bug screen of the roof top tent is gone, the tent is in good condition, but the zipper on the bug screen no longer works. Again, very fixable it just never bothered me since we don’t have crazy amounts of bugs here in Utah.
There is rust around some of the seams and the paint isn’t in perfect condition. For me this was an adventure vehicle so cosmetically there are blemishes, the panels and body are in good condition, I didn’t drive it in the winter if their was salt on the roads so the rust hasn’t really progressed since I bought it.
Tires need to be replaced.
