2006 Duramax built for diesel, dirt, dogs, camp chairs, tools, and bad decisions that (usually) turn into good stories. If you can get there, she’ll get you back.
This is a pre-DEF, old-school Duramax with an Allison 6-speed, from back when diesel trucks were still allowed to have a personality.
It’s been my road trip, camping, and hunting truck, and has been there through
The good:
2006 Chevy 2500HD
Duramax 6.6
Allison 6-speed
No engine codes
No blowby (can provide video on request)
Runs very well and strong
Starts immediately
Never tuned
Oil changed religiously every 3,000 miles
Relatively new batteries
Brakes replaced less than 6,000 miles ago
285s with plenty of life left
Leather interior
Bose sound system
Power seats
Bed liner
Camper tie-down points
Trailer wiring works
Airbags
AFR cold air intake
FM modulator included, so yes, your phone can connect to the stereo and the Bose can still do its thing
6-disc CD changer, because this truck was built in a more civilized age
Bob Seger album included, because I’m generous and because it feels spiritually correct
Tank is about 3/4 full, which is basically a private equity add-back with diesel prices right now
Horn works and it is loud (important).
The honest part:
Says “service airbag”. May or may not need airbag work. Does not affect drivability.
Some say it’s an LLY because of the VIN, others say LBZ because of the 6-speed. My understanding is it’s basically an LBZ with an LLY tune. What I know for certain is it runs strong and does not care what diesel forums argue about at 11:47 p.m.
Has engine brake, but it is not connected at the moment
Has dents, dings, and some flaking paint
Headliner has some (gangster) droop
Driver’s seat leather needs a new cover. I have it. Never put it in.
Tailgate handle is missing some plastic. It comes with the truck. I just never reinstalled it because I kind of liked the raw robot look.
Rear passenger-side taillight is held in partly with tape. Yes, you could fix it easily. No, I have not. The tape sends exactly the kind of message this truck should send.
Has a light bar mount but no light bar. A rock took care of that.
A thief tried to steal it in Denver last summer and failed, which honestly feels on-brand for this truck. He (lets be honest, it was a he) did remove some plastic around the ignition before realizing he was in over his head and fleeing like a coward.
Has OnStar, which is now less of a feature and more of a collector’s item
Background:
I bought it from an older man in Arizona when it had 130k on it. He mostly used it to go back and forth to his favorite campsite in retirement. Since I’ve owned it, it has been a road trip, camping, and hunting truck, not a daily driver. Very little winter use.
This truck is for someone who understands that faded paint, a taped taillight, and a few scars usually mean the thing was actually worth owning.
Not for everyone. For the right guy. The guy who knows the difference between something shiny and something worth owning. Clean trucks are for clean hands and hats with no sweat on em. This is for the inverse.
