2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE - 5.3L V8 - Reliable Runner / Project Truck
Selling my 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 SLE. I’ve loved this truck and it has been a sentimental favorite (15-20 years in the family), but I’ve just barely made the move into a new truck. If you know these trucks, you know the GMT800 is one of the best platforms GM ever built. It’s an honest truck that still starts right up every morning, but it’s ready for some mechanical love and attention from its next owner.
Engine: The legendary 5.3L Vortec V8. It runs strong, sounds great, and has plenty of life left. This engine is the main reason to buy this truck.
Body/Interior: Classic Sierra styling. It’s been an Utah truck, so it has the expected character for its age, but it’s a solid foundation. This truck was one of the many that had the cargo/tail light water leak, so there is some rust damage at the back of the cab body panels. I have routinely mitigated the rusting with a rust transformer and acrylic enamel white paint (see photos).
Reliability: It is currently a twice-a-week driver for short trips around town. It starts, stops, and gets you from A to B with no drama.
Radio/Stereo: Original, still works great!
Custom Wheels and Toyo A/T Open Country Tires
"Permanent" Hitch: It's got a great multilevel, three-size folding hitch. A couple years back I tried EVERYTHING to get it out of the receiver (torch, lube, impact, 6000 RPM 4WD with it chained to a floor rack, etc.). Gave up, stuck a new pin in it as far as it would go, and have towed several times with it "fused" inside the receiver. It's not going anywhere... might as well be part of the frame.
I want to be 100% upfront so no one’s time is wasted. The truck has a few "old truck" quirks that will eventually need attention:
Transmission: The 4L60E is starting to show its age. It has some clunky shifts (1-2 and 2-3) and likes to hang at higher RPMs before shifting. It works for light driving around town, but I wouldn’t recommend it for heavy towing or hauling in its current state.
Shifter: The shift cable has some play, so the "window" to find Drive is a bit narrow (it likes to slip into Neutral if you aren't precise).
Tow/Haul Button: Currently non-functional (likely the common wire break in the shift lever).
Parking Brake: The parking brake is currently disconnected/inoperable.
Horn: The horn is currently not operable either
Power Windows: The power windows still work fine, but they are a bit sluggish (the motor is getting toward the end of its life)
Slight/slow Oil Leak: Like most trucks this age, I usually get a bit of oil on my garage floor after a few days of parking. Not a lot, barely even enough to force me to top off once every 6 monthsI can also produce detailed inspection reports from my mechanic if you want, but this listing includes everything they've identified.Maintenance and new parts:
I have put great regular maintenance into this truck and been slowly replacing parts that have failed, including:
Brand new power-adjust and heated rear view mirrors (JC WHITNEY Mirror SET-JGM59ER)
Brand new 901124 Power Mirror Switch
New tailgate hinges, tailgate latch cables, handle, and handle cover
New headlights (not just bulbs, the whole assembly)
Brand new battery (Feb 2026)
Throttle Body Service: Cleaned and recalibrated the throttle body, especially around the butterfly valve. Common "GM idle stumble" has been fully addressed; the truck idles perfectly at ~600 RPM, even after total power loss (lost idle memory). I can throw in the bottle of throttle body cleaner I used if you want it.
System Reset: Engine Control Module (ECM) idle-relearn performed to ensure smooth shifting and throttle response.
A/C Overhaul (most of the system is brand new)(2025)
Who is this truck for?
This is the perfect rig for someone who wants a "home depot" truck for light yard runs, a mechanic looking for a solid LS-swap candidate, or a student who needs a first vehicle to tinker on. Or maybe just someone who loves these legendary trucks! With some special attention, this truck easily has another 100k miles in it.Price: $3,600 OBO.
