Up for sale is a rare, highly coveted piece of European utility history perfectly sorted for the mountain West. This is a 1989/1990 Steyr-Puch 300GD 4x4 (Austrian version of a Mercedes 300GD). This example is a long-wheelbase, 5-door chassis built alongside the Mercedes G-Class by Magna Steyr in Austria. This specific truck is a former Austrian Radio Truck, meaning it was built for durability and utility with a rare 24V electrical system. The actual VIN is: VAG46131317905145.
Unlike most vintage diesel imports that struggle to maintain highway speeds or climb canyon roads, this truck has been heavily mechanically upgraded and restored. It is a turn-key overlander, trail rig, or unique daily driver.
The Drivetrain Upgrades are documented on my blog: https://snowgwagon.blogspot.com/ and include:
The Engine: The slow, factory-original engine was replaced with a fully rebuilt OM617 3.0L High-Performance Turbo Diesel built by Reinvent the Wheel (over $10,500 for the engine build alone). It features a brand new OE camshaft, a new turbocharger, custom turbo-diesel conversion support arms, a high-performance diesel pump, and a recently rebuilt head. It runs absolutely beautifully, handles elevation with ease, and breathes through brand-new air intake hoses.
The Transmission: Paired with the highly desirable Getrag 711.117 5-speed manual transmission overdrive swap (installed with a brand new clutch, friction plate, pressure plate, and release bearing by MBZ Diesel). It cruises comfortably at highway speeds, a massive upgrade over the factory 4-speed.
Extensive Overhaul & Maintenance History:
Over $36,000 in documented receipts will go to the next owner. Every major system has been touched:
Body & Paint: Stripped, professionally repaired, fully repainted, and protected with an extensive undercoating by CKM Collision ($14k ). Absolutely zero rust anxiety.
Fuel System: Brand new composite fuel tank, added lift pump, completely new hoses, and fully flushed lines.
Cooling & Heating: Recored radiator, new water pump pulley, W126 engine fan clutch, new heater hoses, and new glow plugs.
Cabin & Electrical: Upgraded with a functional 24V radio system, Bluetooth, Android Auto, Dash Cam, Carplay, Polk audio speakers, upgraded LED headlights (6400LM Cree bulbs), a custom-installed tachometer, and voltage gauges. Heavy-duty Rubber Cal Elephant Bark floor mats line the utility interior.
Footwork: Riding on robust BFG All-Terrain T/A (235/85 R16) tires with recent rotation and balancing.
Condition & Mileage:
The chassis currently shows just over 326,400 KM (approx. 202,000 miles), but the drivetrain, paint, fuel system, and cylinder head are practically fresh with only a fraction of those miles on them. It has been meticulously serviced locally by vintage European specialists, iWerners Mercedes.
Terms:
Clean Utah title in hand. I am thinning out my collection to raise funds for other projects, so I am looking for a straightforward, cash-positive sale. No trades. Lowballers will be ignored.
Serious buyers only. Please text or call to set up a time to view this incredible machine in person.
