(likely) Mechanic’s Special - 2010 Subaru Outback

This is a 2010 Subaru Outback that is probably a mechanic’s special. The reason I say probably is that it may need a new head gasket.

This overheated 3x, but each time except the 1st, I quickly shut the car down, waited for the engine to cool down, and refilled the coolant (if needed).

• On the 1st time, I’m not sure how long the car was overheating since I wasn’t looking for the indicator light (it doesn’t have a temp gauge, just a light). After the 1st time it overheated though, I drove it home from Park City through Provo canyon and back up to Sandy with no issues.

• The 3rd time, I took it to Subaru, had them replace the coolant, and they did a head gasket test that came back negative (i.e no head gasket leak), but it could be because the coolant was new.

• The dealer also said it could be a small leak by the thermostat, but that might be a bandaid fix, not the root cause (Dealer: “Found rubber gasket from thermostat pinched/swelling from thermostat housing. Recommend replacing thermostat, thermostat housing,”)

• All this to say, it might need a new head gasket (most likely), but I’m not 100% sure. The price reflects these risks, and I’m open to offers.

The good news is that other than overheating, the car is in very good mechanical shape. I’ll include a write-up by a 3rd party mechanic when I bought that car that shows this if you want. Cosmetically, it’s not great but not terrible. There are some water stains on the seats, scratches and dents on the outside, but nothing egregious.

I can also share the Carfax from when I purchased it.

Since I bought it, I put in an Alpine stereo, Kicker and Polk speakers, and replaced the timing belt. The tires are in very good shape and can be used all 4 seasons.

I don’t want to sell it, but I don’t want to take the risk that I need to do an expensive head gasket repair on a vehicle that’s likely worth less than that would cost.

The subwoofer, amp, and dash cam aren’t included, but you can make me an offer for them.
