Looking for a reliable car that has character? This 2003 Toyota Matrix has plenty of character. Some of it is even visible from across the parking lot. 😂

Let’s just get this out of the way: the exterior is not its strongest selling point. It has definitely lived a life. There are cosmetic imperfections, and I’m not going to pretend it’s a beauty queen. But mechanically? That’s a different story.

I’ve owned this Matrix for the past 18 years, and it has been a dependable car. It has 164,531 miles, a 5-speed manual transmission, and the reliable 1.8L 4-cylinder engine. It runs and drives well, shifts well, has no warning lights, and has no known mechanical issues.

The exterior is fair. There are scratches, dings, and other cosmetic imperfections. If you’re looking for something shiny enough to make your neighbors jealous, keep scrolling. 😂

If you’re looking for a dependable, practical Toyota with a manual transmission, new tires, a roof rack, and plenty of usefulness left in it, this is a much better car than its exterior might suggest.

Basically, it’s the automotive equivalent of wearing sweatpants to a job interview: not dressed to impress, but it still knows how to do the job.

Over the past 18 years I have maintained it regularly, and it’s ready for its next owner.
