1989 Pontiac Firebird - Base Model - 2.8l V6
Car is running, it's been a bit of a project of mine but I have too many projects and not enough time or money. So I am offloading this project to focus on some house projects and a new motorcycle project I started. I got this car in November of 2023 after it had been sitting in a storage unit for 10 years. It was in good condition with minimal rust (see issues below and pictures). I keep it under a car cover when not in use. What I have done:
2024 Partial Engine Rebuild. Tore down to the valves and rebuilt it all back up. Restored the fuel injectors, new spark plugs, new EGR, new coolant & washer fluid reservoirs, new fuel sending unit, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new MAF sensor, new temperature sensor, new fuel pressure regulator, new vacuum hoses. Manual override for the VATS security system. All scheduled maintenance caught up (changed all fluids - coolant, oil, transfer case, transmission, all filters changed, etc). New transmission kickdown cable.
2025 rebuilt the entire wiring harness from headlight to taillight. Changed countless plugs, fixed a handful of shorts, replaced the ECU (this was unnecessary, in the end - so now it comes with an extra one. See extra parts), replaced about 10-15 different relays (kept all the old ones as well). Replaced window motors and rebuilt door latch mechanisms. Upgraded 5x9 speakers (though there is no head unit). New motors for pop-up headlights. Removed all old tint and scraped clean all windows.
Known issues/projects:
VATS security override gets finniky when it's really hot (only had a couple issues with it when sitting in sunlight on >103 degree days)
A/C does not work. I have most the parts to restore this, including the compressor, oil, and actuator.
--Horn doesn't work because it's on the same circuitas the A/C compressor which I know has issues and blows the fuse so I just took that fuse out
Rust on back right side beneath spare wheel is the only substantial rust.
The little orange marker for what gear you are shifting into is missing so you just have to go by feel.
Roof liner is out (I was going to replace the fabric but haven't gotten around to it)
Tires are old and should probably be replaced. They have not been aligned or balanced because TBH they were just so I could move the car around but I don't drive this extensively
Upholstery on the seats is pretty bad. They are comfy enough but they need to be reupholstered.
Some of the weather stripping should be replaced. It doesn't leak in the rain that I have noticed.
Extra parts:
Badges (Firebird and Pontiac badges are in tact)
Extra plastic door runners
Rear hatch and glass (this won't fit in the car so you'll need a truck or something to take this with you)
Rear spoiler
Rear taillight
Rear Firebird plexi logo
ECU
A box of relays
Automatic trunk release mechanism
Extra dashboard (it's the original one which had some holes for extra switches in it, the replacement one installed does not have any extra holes)
Car cover
I kept nearly every part that I replaced and they will come with the car.
Pontiac Service Manual (both books)
Original owners manual and service guide
