After debuting updated versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer last year, Jeep has decided it’s already time for a size upgrade. The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are stretched versions of their counterparts, adding seven inches to the wheelbase and a full foot to the length of the car. What does this mean for passenger and cargo space? And what difference will the new Hurricane engine make?

Why Jeep had its best year ever in 2021

More Cargo Space

The extra foot of space won’t translate to more room in the passenger area, but it does add substantial cargo capacity. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L has a 130-inch wheelbase, reaches 226.7 inches in length and contains 42.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. By comparison, the regular Grand Wagoneer has a 123-inch wheelbase, is 214.7 inches long and has 27.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity.

More Power

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer L will debut a Stellantis twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine, otherwise known as the Hurricane. It’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-, all- or four-wheel drive. The Grand Wagoneer L will have the high-output version of the Hurricane, with 510 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. The Wagoneer L engine has the standard output of 420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque. Like the Grand Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer L can tow up to 10,000 pounds — the highest towing capacity of any SUV

Slightly Better Fuel Economy

Thanks to the Hurricane engine, the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer L will have slightly better fuel economy, even with its increased size. The HO is rated 16 mpg combined, which is 1 mpg better than the 6.4-liter model. These days, every little bit helps.

Jeep Grand Wagoneer L Cost and Release Date

Jeep has not released the official price as of this writing. The 2022 Grand Wagoneer starts at $88,640, and you can expect the Grand Wagoneer L to be a bit higher than that. As for its debut, Jeep said it will be hitting showrooms in summer 2022.

Jeep Grand Cherokee L vs. Jeep Grand Wagoneer

While you’re waiting for the Jeep Grand Wagoneer L to arrive, consider hopping in a Jeep Grand Cherokee L. It offers a third row, though it’s less roomy than the Wagoneer. With the Wagoneer, you pay more for space, luxury and towing capacity. But if you’re willing to deal with closer quarters, the Grand Cherokee L is the more affordable option at $39,985 MSRP, compared to $59,995 for the base level Wagoneer.

Whether you prefer a Jeep Grand Cherokee L or a Jeep Grand Wagoneer, you can find either car — and thousands of others — on KSL Cars.
