What you’ll need to get started

When buying a vehicle in Arizona, you’ll have 15 days to apply for a new title. You don’t want to waste any time going back and forth to the Motor Vehicle Department because you’ve got the wrong forms. When registering your vehicle, you’ll need the following: 

• A signed and completed Title and Registration Application

• A vehicle title signed by both parties

• A lien release, if needed

• Other documents that may apply (power of attorney, personal representative papers, etc.)

• Payment for registration and title fees

You can transfer the title in person at an MVD office or authorized third party provider, or online using an eTitle Transfer. However, there are some limitations on which vehicles are eligible for an eTitle Transfer. Requirements include: 

• One owner (selling) to one owner (buying)

• No liens

• Passenger vehicles

• Arizona title and current Arizona registration

If you are transferring a title from out of state, you’ll need to visit an MVD office in person. 

How much does it cost to transfer a title?

The following fees will be due when you register your new (or new-to-you) car:

What is a vehicle license tax?

The Vehicle License Tax is an annual fee that equates to $2.80 per $100 of assessed value for new vehicles and $2.89 per $100 of assessed value for used vehicles. Because your vehicle will become less valuable each year, this fee will also decrease each year your registration is renewed.
