You can’t drive around Denver without spotting a Subaru Outback (with a dog in the backseat). It is one of the bestselling vehicles in the Centennial State, after all. Ford F-150s in Grand Junction? Yeah, those are pretty popular too. Whether you’ve decided to hop on an automotive bandwagon or purchase a different type of vehicle from a private seller, you need to transfer the title and register the vehicle within 60 days of the purchase.

It costs $7.20 to transfer a car title in Colorado. Taxes and additional registration fees depend on the weight and type of vehicle you purchased, which county you reside in, as well as the type of license plate you select. (You’re going to pay extra if you want a personalized plate that reads “SubyDoo.”) Use this calculator to estimate the total amount you’ll need to pay.

Documentation required to complete a title transfer

The Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles does not currently offer an online option to transfer the vehicle title. You’ll need to make an appointment at your local DMV office and bring the following documents, along with a form of payment, on the designated day and time.

  • Odometer Disclosure Statement
  • Title (signed by all sellers)
  • Personal identification (secure and verifiable)
  • Release of lien (if applicable)
  • Verification of VIN DR 2698 (out of state transfers only)

If you are registering the vehicle at the same time as titling it, you will also need to bring proof of insurance and an enhanced emission test (for models more than 7 years old) to your appointment.
