Whether you bought a tricked-out truck, a midsize SUV or a sensible sedan, vehicle titles must be transferred to the buyer’s name within 30 days of the sale. A $2.50 transfer fee is added to the vehicle title application fee, which ranges from $28 to $33. Texas also charges a 6.25% sales and use tax. Additional taxes and fees vary based on the county you reside in, as well as the type of vehicle you purchased. 

Documentation required for titling

Though the buyer bears most of the responsibility for transferring the title, the seller should immediately submit a Texas Motor Vehicle Transfer Notification as financial protection. This can be done online or via mail.

Buyers should use this locator to find their local tax and DMV office and make an appointment. Bring a form of payment and a photo identification, along with the following forms to transfer the title.

• Title (signed by all sellers) 

• Application for Texas Title and/or Registration

• Release of lien (if applicable)

If you are titling and registering the vehicle simultaneously, you’ll also need to bring proof of insurance and a safety inspection.
