Whether you’re searching for a Jeep to explore the Cascades or a classic car to cruise along the coast, you might be able to find a screaming deal from a private seller in Washington state. When you buy private, however, you’ll need to transfer the title over yourself. Luckily, it’s not too difficult when you’ve got your ducks in a row. Consider KSL Cars your duck wrangler. We’re here to guide you through the process of transferring a car title in Washington.

What you’ll need to get started

There’s nothing worse than getting to the DMV only to find out you’re missing a form. Get prepared to transfer your title by ensuring you have the following:

When filling out the Vehicle Title application, you’ll need the following information handy:

  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Vehicle make, model and year
  • Body type (4-door, pickup, convertible, etc.)
  • Scale weight (Must weigh your vehicle if the weight isn’t already listed on title)
  • Odometer Disclosure (If 2011 model year or newer. Obtain an Odometer Disclosure at a vehicle licensing office if the title is missing.)

There are two ways to submit your Vehicle Title Application in Washington: in person or in the mail. Be aware, if you submit through the mail, each registered owner must sign the form in front of a licensed notary public beforehand. At a vehicle licensing office, you’ll be able to sign it in person in front of a licensing agent. When submitting by mail, you should also include a check or money order to cover any fees. At an office you’ll be able to pay in person.

How much does it cost to transfer a title?

The basic cost to register a passenger vehicle in Washington is $43.25. More fees will be determined by factors including location, vehicle weight and taxes. Contact a vehicle licensing office in advance to determine the exact amount.

After you purchase the vehicle, you have 15 days to transfer the ownership to your name. After 15 days, penalties will start to incur, beginning with $50 on the 16th day, then $2 per day after, up to $125.

How long will a transfer take to complete?

It will take 8-10 weeks to get your new title. If you need it before then, you can mail your forms to a Quick Title office, or visit them in person. This expedited title will cost an extra $50 (plus any standard title fees). All that’s left to do is slap on your new license plates and hit the road. And if the honeymoon phase between you and your new ride ends up being over before it ever started, you can always list your vehicle on KSL Cars.
