To ski or not to ski? There is no question. It doesn’t matter if it’s a beautiful bluebird day or if the snow is swirling sideways against a grey sky — nothing is going to stop you from hitting the slopes. (Unless you’re driving a rear-wheel-drive vehicle with bald tires, that is.) Don’t worry. These makes and models are capable of getting you there in any weather.

Subaru WRX

Though you might not automatically think of a four-door sedan like WRX for winter driving, it comes standard with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. And it is unbeatable when coupled with winter tires. Carve the corners on slippery mountain roads with confidence. WRX’s turbocharged engine is a blast to drive in the snow.

Subaru Outback, Crosstrek or Forester

Not keen on a powerful sedan? Subaru’s SUV lineup also comes standard with all-wheel drive. Plus, you get more cargo space for your gear and extra ground clearance for navigating deeper snow in the winter or dirt roads in the summer.

Mazda CX-5

Sporty yet luxurious, the Mazda CX-5 is another excellent AWD option for powderhounds in Utah. The standard engine offers a decent amount of pep, but spring for the turbocharged engine if you have the money. It’s worth every dollar.

Audi Q5 or SQ5

Audi’s Quattro AWD system is one of the best on the market. It moves the vehicle confidently through the worst weather. Q5 models have zippy engines and teched-out cabins, while SQ5 models boast outright sizzling performance.

Kia Sorento or Telluride

Kia today is not the same Kia of even 10 years ago. The automobile manufacturer has made great strides in quality. Both Sorento and Telluride are reliable rides with a lot of luxury and technology for the money. And “snow mode” abilities make these SUVs must-haves for Utah drivers without deep pockets.

KSL Cars has thousands of AWD listings, including Toyota RAV4 which deserves an honorable mention on this roundup of snow-going vehicles.
