2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro test drive review
Discussed in this article
Remember in high school, people would write “don’t ever change” in their friends’ yearbooks? The Toyota Tacoma is the truck equivalent to everyone’s favorite high school buddy. You know, the one who shows up to the 30-year reunion with the same affable charm you remember from the good old days. It’s instantly recognizable, still popular after all these years and really hasn’t changed much.

After nearly 30 years of production, the Tacoma has remained true to its roots at a time when most cars are future focused. Of course, rumor has it that Toyota has plans for both a fully-electric and a hybridized Tacoma that will supposedly debut in 2024. The gas version will likely get an upgrade as well. Change may be inevitable, but in the meantime, Taco purists will be happy to know that the beloved, best-selling pickup is still the same truck they know and love. See Tacomas for sale
KSL Cars spent a week with the 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Double Cab, which is largely similar to the 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro we reviewed last year. It’s got the same 3.5-liter V6 engine under the hood and virtually the same specs across the board.

Special color for 2023
Since 2015, Toyota has released exclusive colors for each model year of their TRD Pro vehicles, and this year was no different. New for 2023, you can get the Tacoma TRD Pro in Solar Octane — a bright, reddish-orange paint that’s strikingly bold without being too bright. Combined with the black TRD Pro accents — such as the Toyota heritage grille, 16-inch black alloy wheels and hood scoop — it’s quite a looker on the road. For looks alone, we give our Tacoma TRD Pro tester a 10/10.

New packages for the SR5
Aside from the Solar Octane color, there are no other significant changes for the 2023 Tacoma TRD Pro. But if you’re planning on the SR5 trim, you now have the option of adding two new packages: the SX or the Chrome.
The SX package adds blacked-out features and badging for V6 models. The Chrome package adds chrome door handles, chrome exhaust tips, 18-inch chrome-finished alloy wheels, other chrome trim and a leather-wrapped shift knob. The Chrome package is only available for Double Cab SR5 models with a 5-foot bed and a V6 engine.

How much does the 2023 Toyota Tacoma cost?
As you might suspect, the 2023 Tacoma is more expensive than the 2022 version — but only slightly. Here’s the starting MSRP for all six 2023 Tacoma models:
SR: $27,750 See listings
SR5: $29,540 See listings
TRD Sport: $40,970 See listings
TRD Off-Road: $35,940 See listings
Limited: $40,505 See listings
TRD Pro: $47,185 See listings
Toyota also offers a Trail Special Edition for 2023 that starts at $40,970. Our TRD Pro tester in the special Solar Octane color rang up at $51,229 after delivery, processing and handling fees. It may seem like a big jump to go from $27,750 to $51,229, but for drivers who prefer an off-road ready truck with no modifications, the TRD Pro is worth the extra price.

Future upgrades?
For some Tacoma fans, part of the appeal is its enduring simplicity. But a few upgrades might go a long way toward making this beloved pickup even more enjoyable to drive in the future. Aside from the rumored hybrid engine for 2024, there are a few more upgrades we wouldn’t mind seeing in the Tacoma.
Ventilated front seats (and second-row seats) would be a great option, along with a slightly larger infotainment screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. If Toyota really wants to take things to the next level, a little more leg and head room in the second row would be a welcome upgrade, too. Even with these minor upgrades, the Tacoma could still maintain its integrity and unique flair in the midsize pickup segment.

Get it while you can
Is it worth buying a 2023 Toyota Tacoma, given that major upgrades are just around the corner? Well, if you’re a die-hard Tacoma fan who prefers things to be as frill-free and analog as possible, then yes. This may be your last chance to own the old school version before it gets the modern upgrades it needs to stay relevant in a technologically advanced market.
While many Tacoma buyers purchase this truck with the intent of customizing it to suit their preferences, the TRD Pro model is an especially great option for those who want an off-road capable truck that’s ready to go out of the box. It’s dependable, it looks great and it holds its value well. Plus, if you happen to grab one in the special TRD Pro-exclusive Solar Octane color, you may be sitting on a future collector’s item.
The Toyota Tacoma has such a strong and loyal following that it’s unlikely you’ll regret your decision to own one — be it from 2023 or any other model year. Get your hands on a new or used Taco on KSL Cars today.
