Lexus RZ 300e makes a strong case for going electric

Why moving to an electric vehicle may make perfect sense for you.
Jason Bell | July 10, 2025

Electric vehicles have never been more advanced, accessible or stylish than they are today. What was once a fringe segment in the automotive industry has become increasingly mainstream, especially here in Utah.

Despite their growing popularity, the question remains: When does it make sense to buy an EV? The answer depends on a few key factors, primarily your driving habits, access to charging and lifestyle.

To further answer this question, we will use the all-new Lexus RZ 300e as an example, a luxury EV SUV that highlights the advantages of going electric when the conditions are right.

You have a consistent daily commute

If your driving consists of predictable miles each day — to and from work, school drop-offs, errands and other local activities — an EV such as the Lexus RZ 300e might be a perfect fit. With an estimated range of 266 miles (which drops to 224 with the optional 20-inch wheels our tester had), the RZ 300e easily covers the average American daily drive — about 30-40 miles round trip according to Market Watch

That means no anxiety about running out of range, and no need to hunt for public chargers. That is, unless you take an impromptu trip to Wendover, Nevada, or something.

For commuters who are tired of frequent gas station stops, the RZ 300e offers a peaceful, quiet and refined experience, with instant torque and smooth acceleration that belies its 201 horsepower rating.

You can charge at home

Charging at home is a game changer for EV ownership. If you have access to home charging, you can literally fuel your car while you sleep. If you can, opt for the much faster Level 2 charger. A Level 1 standard outlet will eventually charge your vehicle if you don’t leave the house often, but it is slow.

The convenience can’t be overstated. No more detours to the pump, no more waiting in line and no worries about fluctuating gas prices.

The RZ 300e makes the most of this setup. Plug it in at night, especially with a Level 2 charger, and wake up each morning with a full battery, ready to tackle your day. Plus, charging at home is typically far cheaper than fueling up at a gas station or even using a public charger, especially if you can take advantage of off-peak electricity rates.

You appreciate premium design and comfort

There are several reasons why someone might be drawn to an EV other than practicality. First on that list for a lot of buyers is style, and the 2025 Lexus RZ 300e delivers that in spades.

With its striking spindle body design, optional two-tone copper paint, futuristic LED lighting and coupe-like silhouette, the RZ 300e stands out as one of the most attractive EVs on the road. Sure, it has its roots in the Toyota bZ4X and the Subaru Solterra, but you would hardly know it here. EV or not, the RZ is exceptionally stylish.

Inside, the cabin is equally impressive. The minimalistic, driver-focused interior features premium materials, a prominent touchscreen, ambient lighting and Lexus’ signature attention to detail. It’s a serene space that complements the silent electric drive beautifully.

You want lower maintenance and ownership costs

EVs have far fewer moving parts than traditional combustion vehicles, which means no oil changes, transmission issues or exhaust system worries. That means lower maintenance costs over time and less time taken out of your day for service visits.

Lexus also offers complimentary maintenance plans for the RZ, providing extra peace of mind, knowing that any necessary maintenance is covered during the first two visits.

Federal and state incentives can also help reduce the cost of entry. While Lexus EVs may not currently qualify for the full federal tax credit due to manufacturing location requirements, local or state rebates might still be available depending on current offers.

You’re ready for the EV lifestyle

It’s important to note, owning an EV still requires a bit of planning. Long-distance road trips will take more time due to charging stops, and not every charging network or station is created equally. And it can be surprisingly expensive.

But, if your primary use is commuting and daily driving, and you have reliable access to charging — especially at home — there’s a good chance you’ll not only adjust to the EV lifestyle, but come to prefer it.

The 2025 Lexus RZ 300e, in particular, provides a gentle, luxurious entry point into the luxury EV segment and is full of style far above most other EVs. It’s not trying to be the fastest, longest range EV on the market, but it does succeed in being supremely pleasant and practical for daily, luxury EV life.

Final thoughts

When does it make sense to buy an EV? If you have a consistent daily drive, access to home charging, value low maintenance costs and want a uniquely styled vehicle, an EV could be for you. The RZ 300e is proof that going electric no longer requires compromising on luxury, design or comfort, and instead is a sign that the future of commuting could be electric.
