Packed with off-road hardware such as a factory-installed Old Man Emu suspension kit, skid plates, rear recovery points and all-terrain tires, this truck is designed to handle rough trails and pavement with ease. And it does. It’s very comfortable and capable, even in your daily errands.
The Trailhunter also includes a snorkel for improved performance in dusty or waterlogged conditions, and an additional 2.5-inch lift that increases its already impressive ground clearance.
A locking rear differential and Toyota’s Multi-Terrain Select system offer tailored traction settings for sand, mud, rocks and just about any other terrain you’ll traverse. Additionally, the Crawl Control system acts as an off-road cruise control, helping the truck maintain a steady pace over challenging obstacles.

The Trailhunter’s cabin is purpose-built for adventure. Durable materials such as water-resistant upholstery and rubberized floor mats emphasize utility. The 14-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto adds a welcome, modern touch, while additional storage cubbies accommodate gear heavy adventures.
The front seats and seating position are excellent and comfortable. However, rear seat space is tight, and taller passengers will find legroom to be limited.

Fuel efficiency and power
Under the hood, the Tacoma Trailhunter features a turbocharged and hybridized i-Force Max 2.4-liter 4-cylinder motor that produces an impressive 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque routed through a traditional 8-speed automatic transmission. There is torque for days here, and we loved it. However, don’t expect great fuel economy. The best we averaged was just shy of 19 mpg, far below the government estimates.
Is the Trailhunter worth it?
For those who prioritize adventure and off-road capability right from the factory, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter is a standout option in the crowded segment. It offers everything you need for overland adventures without requiring aftermarket upgrades. However, its high price and compromises in rear seat comfort and fuel economy may give some buyers pause.
