9 new and improved sedans for 2024

The latest models aren’t your parents’ family car.
Kathleen Clove | March 6, 2024

Once upon a time, sedans were the ideal family hauler, taking you from garage sales to mousetopia. And while they’ve taken a back seat to SUVs in recent years, don’t think we’re all out of love just yet. Generally, sedans are still lighter, more aerodynamic and get much better gas mileage. And honestly, you don’t always need THAT MUCH vehicle. Take note, these reimagined 2024 models are leaner, cleaner and even more comfortable than ever before.

Compact

Hyundai Elantra | $21,475*

Hyundai’s 2024 Elantra isn’t all-new, but the half-mark refresh of the seventh-generation model is leaner and meaner — at least, in looks. Designers call the new grille a shark nose; the headlights are slim and a bit fierce looking. Like when your mom just learned you sluffed class. Inside, Hyundai added USB ports for backseat passengers and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The sedan keeps its 147-horsepower 4-cylinder engine.

Mini Cooper | $26,795

Manual transmissions are just plain fun to drive, especially when you’re zipping around in a little package. Mini Cooper fans, rejoice! The 6-speed stick is back, available across the entire 2024 lineup. The diminutive ride includes a 134-horsepower 3-cylinder engine, but if you need something punchier, upgrade to the 189-horsepower turbo.

But most interesting of all is the new interior. It’s stripped down. Way down. The instrument cluster is a round, central screen in the middle of the dash. And that’s it.

Volkswagen Jetta | $21,435

More standard features are always appreciated, so the Volkswagen Jetta seemed to be lagging a bit. But for 2024, it’s back in the game, adding the IQ. Drive safety tech suite to all its automatic transmission trims, as well as rain-sensing wipers and an auto-dimming mirror. It’s a bit more stylish, too; a leather shift knob and faux leather steering wheel come standard.

Midsize

Ford Mustang | $30,920

When a car is already ranked #1 among performance coupes, does it really need a change? Ford thinks so. The 2024 Mustang not only looks burlier, it has more get up and go; because, why have a measly 450-horsepower motor when you can have 480 with the upgraded Coyote V8?

There’s a redesigned cockpit to go with it, including a 12.4-inch customizable digital cluster screen with sharper graphics. And if you’re thinking, “Nah, that’s not sporty enough,” just wrap your hands around the flat-bottom steering wheel as you casually check out the Vapor Blue paint in the sideview mirror.

Hyundai Sonata | $27,500

You get an upgrade, you get an upgrade, everyone gets an upgrade. At least, that’s what happened at Hyundai this year. As was the smaller Elantra, the 2024 Sonata was updated inside and out. All-wheel drive is now available in all the trims, a nice addition for Utah drivers.

The revamped grille includes a seamless horizon lamp — a light bar that extends across the front. It’s a bit sci fi, but not in a nerdy way. Inside, there’s a 12.3-inch infotainment screen and digital gauge cluster. Hyundai dropped the 1.6-liter turbo engine in favor of a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder.

Toyota Crown | $41,445

Only in its second year, the Toyota Crown is already taking baby steps to improve its interior comfort and styling. In addition, in the midlevel trim you can now opt for the advanced technology package (standard in the premium trim), which includes features such as adaptive cruise control and cross-traffic alerts.

The 2024 Crown is a spacious midsize sedan, with the perks of all-wheel drive and SUV-style seating. Two hybrid powertrain options are available — a 236-horsepower and 340-horsepower turbo — with an estimated 42/41 mpg.

Full-size

2024 Acura TLX | $45,242

If you’re going to get a facelift, it should be subtle — a good mantra for both people and cars. Acura’s 2024 TLX upgrade is definitely low-key, but the tweaks make it sleeker all around. On the outside, there’s a new frameless grill (with an inner starburst design) and a couple of new colors.

The base model, which has been around since 2021, has been dropped for 2024, which means you no longer need to upgrade for fancy features. The new standard now includes leather seating, ambient lighting and a premium sound system. Want all-wheel drive? It’s standard in the A-Spec trim.

Genesis G70 | $40,525

The Genesis G70 decided to focus on the inside. The 2024 base now has 300 horsepower standard, replacing the previous 2.0-liter turbo with 48 more horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. The 6-speed manual transmission is no longer an option — it’s now an 8-speed automatic only. But, it does come in both rear-wheel and all-wheel drive, so you can choose between the smoothest ride or winter preparedness. Brembo brakes are standard across all the trims.

Dodge Chargers are now EVs, but definitely not the wimpy variety.

Dodge Charger Daytona | $60,000+ (estimate)

Is a muscle car as sexy with an electric motor? The 2024 Dodge Daytona will let you be the judge of that, but only after you take a spin in the two-door, standard all-wheel drive electric vehicle.

This isn’t your wimpy EV. When you hit the gas, you’ll feel it; the Daytona comes with 456-horsepower standard. We’re talking 0-60 in just 3.8 seconds. Not good enough? Hit the power boost button for a 15-second 40-horsepower boost. The redesigned body ain’t too shabby, either.
