Listed here is an absolutely clean and gorgeous example of the pinnacle of automotive engineering: the world-class 1991 Audi 200 turbo QUATTRO. As a V.A.G. enthusiast of many years as I understand it there were only approximately 900 sedans and 350 Avant/wagons imported into the USA for ONE YEAR ONLY! Many, many of these remarkable beasts are sadly no longer with us and this is a great example of an era of performance before the release of the first “S” cars that had the AAN engine which is quite similar to this 3B except minus a distributor.
The machine: This specific 200 TQ as I stated is an exceptionally clean and cared for example of any used type 44 chassis you will find for sale today. The interior is black leather/carpeting and is very, very clean 9/10. The power leather seats are very soft and supple yet very supportive. The carpet, OEM Audi rings/quattro logo floor mats, door panels, wood grain trim and headliner all all very clean without tears, rips or large stains. If I were to keep it I would wrap all the wood with VVIVID brushed gunmetal metallic vinyl as I did my 4.2 C5 A6 but that’s just me
Exterior: The L90E Alpine white paint is a solid 7/10 as far as condition and shine. Overall it is shiny, smooth and clean however the trunk could be buffed. There are a few small spots where a very fine touchup or clearcoat pen could be used but that is to be expected of a car this age that has been used. Yes the leading edge of the hood has some paint chips. There are four main areas with defects in the body: the rear bumper above the exhaust, a 3” circle forward of the passenger fender arch, a small hairline crack on the driver’s front fender and a ding in the rear passenger quarter panel the size of a….quarter. This is not a show car and whomever gets this should not at all fret about daily driving this thing with the body in the relatively excellent though less that perfectly pristine current condition.
The windshield has a large crack on the driver’s side so could be replaced sometime. New wipers are included. A brand new ignition lock cylinder barrel, ignition switch and fuel filter was just installed. A good used authentic BOSCH fuel pump and clean strainer basket was also installed in the fuel tank.
Mechanical: The 3B code 217 horsepower inline five cylinder 20 valve performance engine is in outstanding shape for the 173,000 miles on it. There is no check engine light CEL, no problems and no misfires. It fires right up and roars like a lion. An aftermarket fuel injector harness has been installed as well as a pair of SAMCO SPORT silicone intake hoses. There is also a BRAND NEW Dayco water pump, tensioner and timing belt kit included in the trunk.
The exhaust system is entirely stock OEM and quiet however the rear resonator suitcase has had some patch panels added to it. If I were to keep the car I would remove the entire system and replace it all with 2 1/4” mandrel bend aluminized tubing with a high flow catalytic converter and dual outlet tips. The 5 speed transmission shifts smooth and does not leak at all.
Wheels: OEM BBS 15” basket weave wheels with MASSIVE hex caps are currently mounted.. Tires are Bridgesone Potenza 009 and UniRoyal Tiger Paw 215/60/15 all around and are in ok shape but do have hairline cracks so could be changed out for performance rubber if you desire. An OEM donut spare is included with a good tire in the lightweight plastic trunk. For an additional $600 there is a set of staggered premium MANDRUS MILLENIUM wheels. These wheels sell new for $300 each but do have some small scuffs in some places but overall are in excellent 8.5/10 condition. All wheels have near new SUMITOMO HTRZ 3 rubber. The front tires are 225/40/18 on 8 1/2” wheels ET 32 and rears are 295/30/18 on 9 1/2” wheels ET? and are well within 4% circumference so as to not damage the TORSEN Quattro drivetrain when in use. The difference in width does not at all matter, it is the CIRCUMFERENCE that is at issue when regarding the center Quattro differential to avoid damage. The wide rear wheels do indeed fit underneath the flared arches however some slight massaging of one smalll area about 5mm of the inner fender well in one spot is all that is needed to clear the inner rear tires from rubibing during my test fit. A pair of 3mm wheel spacers might also help. Front wheels should fit fine without issue.
Suspension: OEM but is in great shape. The times I have driven this car the struts and springs felt nice and smooth and quiet. Again, if I were to keep this car I would tear it all out in favor of an enthusiast oriented Eibach/Ground control weld in sleeve coilover kit as I installed on my race prepped/full cage 4000 MC2 10v TQ and am quite happy with their performance with Bilstein sport suspension.
REBUILT/RESTORED title due to I believe a very instantaneous and brief engine fire that was immediately extinguished by the fact that NONE of the paint on the hood even got near hot enough to burn off leaving exposed steel. The hood light did get melted a bit and the air intake filter cover has one small corner broken off but is only cosmetic in nature. A previous owner believed a worm gear hose clamp was sufficient for the high pressure braided fuel line to the fuel rail. Of course it was not and has been removed and replaced with an OEM stainless steel braided fuel line.
Brake/Power steering fluids need to be topped off. I have some CHF 11S mineral oil on the way so the steering will be tight until the reservoir is topped off. Last I drove it the pump worked just fine, it was silent and the steering was quite smooth.
Four main body blemishes listed above but are quite minor and would be easy for a paint/body guy to correct to match the rest of this vehicle.
Rear headliner is sagging. Windshield cracked on driver’s side. New wipers that are included could be installed if you like, the wiper nut caps are missing. No stereo/rear BOSE speakers and passenger rear door pocket missing. Front BOSE/AUDI speakers are still in place.
Airbag light is currently on because it was disconnected while the battery was still energized/connected so set a fault code that can easily be cleared. Brake light is on but should clear itself when topped off with fluid. Car does have UFO front brakes.
New performance tires will be needed soon however these staggered premium MONDRUS MILLENIUM 18” wheels with SUMITOMO rubber would be included for an additional $600.
Currently the car is not insured or registered as it has been in storage for a bit at my shop while I have made the repairs just mentioned. If you would like to hear it run and want to drive it on my street that is fine but as it is transported from my shop it needs to towed either on a flatbed or on a car dolly with the rear driveline disconnected. I know with State Farm insurance a temporary policy can be acquired with just a VIN#, possibly your company would offer this service as well. Please understand my perspective:. Should we get pulled over during a test drive without valid license plates and an officer asks for license, insurance and registration how do we answer “But we are just on a test drive, officer”, Nice try, he doesn’t care as my wonderful pristine car hauled off to the impound yard as the tow truck driver tears the whole front end off, and tells me “oops sorry man.” NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!!!
I feel as good a condition as this is in I am asking a fair price considering these magnificent machines in even nicer flawless condition still command over $7,000 to Audi enthusiasts. This is truly a mini performance limousine which I do not want to sell but ultimately it is better to go to a loving home now and get used on a daily basis.
I have listed everything I can think of so as to not waste your time or more importantly mine. I am quite busy preparing my B5 A4 30v 2.8 V6 Avant as that is my main priority.
