Super fun truck! We rebuilt a lot of this old beauty ($$6,000) and we’re transferring all of that and more to you and value. New (under 5,000 miles tires and rims are worth abt $2000 alone!
Massive lift, including body lift. New front brakes, nicely working engine. Windows, heater and AC work fine. You can detach the rear cover completely for an entirely different look in the summer! You can make this into a serious off road warrior, or just use it as a retro, muscular, oversized OJ Simpson pavement king. Or, heck, paint it pink for the biggest bad-A Barbie tank the world has ever seen.
Issues: Rear differential and transfer case should be rebuilt to future proof it. Then I’d feel confident eating up any trail the mountains can throw at it.
There is rust on this body. Frame is solid despite somewhat less than normal rust for its age. The rear gate doesn’t work and is rusted through in one spot. It can be completely replaced for about $800. Driver’s door fasteners need to be adjusted for smoothest operation, but it opens/ loses if you lift it up a bit. Engine leaks oil a little, but I’d keep it as is until it gets bad, which could be a couple of years. It is not critical by any means. A new seal to stop all engine leaking is about $800 at the shop.
List of things that I have replaced with new parts : engine coil, starter motor, new battery, EGR sensor replaced (to pass emissions), body and suspension lift kits, clock spring, several suspension parts, front left axle, rear drive shaft (custom made from GRS Driveline to accommodate unique geometry of lifts) u joint, front and rear brakes and rotors new (less than 2,000 miles on them) several linkages.
Replaced with picked (used) parts: windshield motor, coiled spring to hold up trunk.
Your teenager can live his/her dream with this monster driving to high school as is.
Or, if you are handy and have the vision you could put a few new panels on, fix the rear gate and driver’s door, paint it (all of this would cost about $9k) it and sell it for $20k. You could literally drive it for 1-2 years while fixing up these things and sell it for $20k after you are done. I’ve put so much time and energy into it that I would love to finish but we actually have too many cars we are fixing up and selling.
Bottom line: I bought this about two years ago for $7500, and I’ve put in $4,500, much of it was my own work, for a total value of about $6,500 in repairs. So, I put in about $11,500 and am only asking less than 1/2 that. This is an incredible deal (for you, not for me). I took the hit, but had lots of fun with the boys teaching and learning about this big beauty. I am transferring the added value to you. You could make this into something beautiful and Car Show worthy. I have a friend who takes these and makes them into $20-$90k beauties.
