Best truck for gas mileage: 2024 Ford Maverick

It’s not every truck that gets an EPA estimated 37 combined mpg (33 mpg city, 42 mpg highway), but that’s what makes the 2024 Ford Maverick one of the best gas mileage trucks we’ve seen so far. Those numbers are better than some fuel-efficient sedans, and those sedans don’t have a spacious 4.5-foot bed and 2,000 lbs of towing capacity. If you’re used to full-size trucks, don’t be scared off by its compact size — it’s up to the task for most jobs.

Best sedan for gas mileage: 2024 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid

Best SUV for gas mileage: 2024 Kia Niro

All the cars on this list have great city and highway mileage, but the 2024 Kia Niro also has a city-friendly look to go with its impressive mpg. If you’re looking for the storage and performance of an SUV with less bulk and a sleek vibe, you’ve found it. And with 53 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway, it’s a model of fuel efficiency. Opt for the plug-in hybrid version, and you’ll also get 33 miles of all-electric range.

Best hatchback for gas mileage: 2024 Toyota Prius

The most fuel-efficient hatchback in 2024 shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. We’re used to seeing the Toyota Prius atop gas mileage rankings — we aren’t used to turning our heads when one drives by, though. A sleek new redesign gives the 2024 Prius the look of a car you’d go out of your way to drive, not just one that’s good for the planet. And there are certainly no sacrifices on that front — the EPA estimates the Prius has 57 mpg in the city and 56 mpg on the highway.

Best minivan for gas mileage: 2024 Toyota Sienna

It’s no secret that there are some big families in Utah. In fact, thanks to Toyota’s hybrid wizardry, the Sienna can compete with plenty of sedans and compacts, notching a combined 36 mpg. Not too shabby for a car that can fit the whole soccer team.

And while you’re enjoying the sharp handling and acceleration, you’ll be getting 26 mpg for city driving and 35 mpg on the highway. (Car and Driver even reported 38 mpg highway in its test.)

Best convertible for gas mileage: 2024 MINI Convertible

Depending on your preferences, the 2024 MINI Convertible may not be the convertible you had in mind. But it is the car that'll save you the most gas money while you cruise top-down in the sunshine. If you choose to ride with the MINI, you’ll get crisp handling, tons of responsiveness and a fun vibe that perfectly matches the driving experience. The 33 mpg for highway driving (23 mpg in the city) is best-in-class, but not so far ahead that you can’t still justify going with a more traditional convertible.
